About Me

My name is Omar Beltran. I’m a Cyber Software Engineer at Peraton in San Diego, CA. I’m a San Diego State Computer Science grad, currently working toward an MS in Computer Science at Georgia Tech with coursework so far in Computer Networks and Software Analysis. I build and maintain software for systems that run around the clock, where downtime isn't an abstraction and the people using the thing are usually a phone call away.

I started at Peraton in 2021 as a Systems Administrator and moved into software engineering from there. I work on SELinux policy development, C/C++ and Python tooling, and leading our data migration for site installations. A lot of my work sits close to the operational side. Talking to the people who actually use the systems and turning what they need into something that holds up in the field.

The through-line in most of what I do is wanting to understand why a thing works, not just that it does. That's what pulled me from SysAdmin work toward software, and it's why I keep gravitating toward the layer where the abstractions get thin.
